Problems Addressed in Transpersonal Hypnosis
When a person is regressed to an earlier time or a previous life, the goal is to help resolve problems in the present. Transpersonal Hypnosis is used in part to help find, explore and resolve feelings about past situations, so that new insights and information can bring about improvements (often dramatic) to current life situation.
These past feelings may cause you to feel and behave in ways that don’t make sense in the present moment. For example, these feelings and behaviors from the past might cause you:
- To have fears and phobias without knowing why
- To feel guilty for no easily understood reason
- To have difficulty being intimate
- To have a variety of relationship issues
- To feel a growing sense of disconnection from the people and things you care about for no apparent reason
- To feel ‘rudderless’ in life, somehow losing motivation and clear sense of purpose
- To feel alienated from the spiritual dimensions of life
Integrated Imagery: Regression Hypnosis
The technique primarily used in Transpersonal Hypnosis is called Integrated Imagery: Regression Hypnosis (IIRH), and is based on the principles in Eriksonian hypnotherapy, Gestalt therapy, Psychodrama, Jungian psychology, various forms of regression therapy, and certain body-based psychotherapies. From a spiritual or transpersonal perspective, it draws on the wisdom of Eastern religions, Western mystical traditions, and Esoteric spiritual philosophies – such as the intuited psychic readings of Edgar Cayce.
As a technique to aid in psychological and spiritual growth through exploration of the unconscious mind, IIRH was developed over twenty years of psychotherapy practice by clinical psychologist John Z. Amoroso, Ph.D. This technique uses a positive psychological approach focused on purposeful living and creativity. The use of hypnosis to induce a light trance state can help set the concerns of the conscious mind aside by creating a more relaxed condition. The unconscious mind, which holds the deeper wisdom and guidance of the inner self, can then be more effectively accessed.
Regression hypnosis is an accepted psychotherapeutic technique. Exploration of the unconscious mind has roots in the work of preeminent psychologist Carl Jung and is widely noted in the premises and theories of transpersonal psychology. One may refer to these as past life memories, or memories of the collective unconscious, according to one’s personal beliefs. It is unnecessary to accept a belief in reincarnation in order to use Integrated Imagery techniques. Regression hypnosis differs from such techniques as reverie or guided imagery in that it takes the Traveler back along a time continuum. The session Guide may suggest that the Traveler first explore earlier present life experiences and then move further back in time through the birth experience and even further back into previous lifetimes. Through this exploration, clues to current life challenges often unexplained by current life experiences can be found. The unconscious mind guides the Traveler to images or incidents that are important or useful to know.
The full participation of the Traveler is required during the trance journey. The Traveler is never unaware or out of control during the session and verbally works with the Guide throughout, as the Guide helps the Traveler navigate the many stages of the journey. The Traveler is recognized as a being of body, mind, and spirit. The eternal part of each of us is the spirit which, according to the Edgar Cayce readings, keeps a record of the soul’s experiences in what is termed the Akashic Record, or Book of Life. Each spirit has been given free will and has chosen its own path to fulfillment of purpose. This includes a number of life experiences on earth. The memories of these lives are accessed by the Traveler. Bringing such memories to the surface through the use of active imagination can offer new insights into the present-life personality.

One of the unique aspects of Dr. Amoroso’s approach to regression hypnosis is what he terms the Energetic Chain of Experience (E.C.E.). This relates to the soul’s stream of consciousness throughout its continuous journey in life, death, birth, and the periods in between the life experiences. His methods seek to also uncover memories of the time the soul spends planning the next life, choosing a life situation, the time spent in-utero prior to birth, and the streams of potential outcomes the soul envisions from a future life experience. Unlocking memories that have accumulated over the skein of time, discovering the origins of both positive and negative complexes that affect personality, and using this information to benefit the Traveler’s current life situation is the objective of Integrated Imagery regression hypnosis. In this theory, each lifetime is unique and begins a fresh slate of experiences.
The spirit brings forward both positive and negative imprints from former incarnations that may influence the current life. Some examples of positive imprints might be ‘natural’ musical skill, especially strong leadership ability, or an inherent fondness for animals. Examples of negative imprints might include lack of self- esteem, feelings of abandonment, or lack of self-confidence unsubstantiated by present life experiences.
How does Transpersonal Hypnosis work?
There are several stages to Transpersonal Hypnosis, beginning with cultivting a deep state of relaxation
Relaxation
Relaxation is the first part of the hypnosis phase and you are slowly and gently guided into progressive stages of deep relaxation, to calm body and mind.
Visualization
Next, you move on to the visualization stage of hypnosis. Instead of asking if you see a particular thing or feel a certain way, you are asked open-ended questions, which allows you to talk freely about whatever you recall, – even if it’s something that doesn’t necessarily make sense at first, for example, like a strong sensation of a colour, feeling, or thought, without any context.
With patience, you may begin to recall factual events, perhaps when you were much younger or what appears to be completely foreign experiences relating to a different person, place and time. The intention here is to allow whatever images, feelings and sesnations to appear and explore them, without judgement and compassion. If you find what surfaces to be potentially very emotionally challenging, then like with any typical hypnosis session, you remain firmly in control and can simply decide not to explore in greater detail and revisit when ready to do so.
Consciously Examining Memory
You will be told in great deal about what happened with the aim of putting information into perpective. It may be the case that you’ll need some time before the full signifcance and benefits of special memory recollection is revealed. For many, the benefits are noticeable improvements to health, outlook on life, behavioural change, meaning, inner-strength and belief.
